5-STEP GUIDE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP WHEN YOU FEEL STUCK

Are you feeling stuck and unsure? Want to know know what to first? Just answer these five questions.

Think for a minute about your biggest challenge. The thing that has you feeling overwhelmed, unsure, wracked with indecision, stalled out, has your mind racing at all hours. With that challenge in mind, consider these questions. Be honest and thoughtful in your response.

By the end, you will have your first step to move toward overcoming this challenge.

1. What impact would it have on my life to overcome this challenge?

Understanding the impact of overcoming this challenge will motivate you. It becomes your ‘why.’ It also gives you a target. You have to know where you want to go. Imagining your life with this significant challenge removed can help you articulate that destination.

2. What has interfered with me overcoming this challenge?

Most likely, this challenge has been there for some time, slowly growing without your realizing it. Maybe some event triggered a change, and you are suddenly faced with this challenge and has paralyzed you. What feels like a roadblock to overcoming it? What stops you when you think about making a change?

3. What resources do I have to support me in overcoming this?

Who in your life has the expertise or experience to help you through this challenge? What information can you find to educate yourself? What tools can you use to guide you as you make progress? Consider resources that directly combat roadblocks and resources that aim straight for your target.

4. What are ten (10) possible ways I could tackle this challenge?

Depending on the complexity of your challenge and the resources available to you, you may come up with more than 10. Add them if you do; the more possibilities you have, the more opportunities for change. If you struggle with coming up with any ideas, use your resources from question three to help you brainstorm. It’s essential to view this step as brainstorming - don’t rule out any possibilities yet.

5. What ONE thing can I realistically do within the next 24-48 hours to get started?

The golden ticket. Your first step. The magic is you already know what to do, and now you have to do it! As you review your brainstorm of possibilities, consider things like the time involved, your willingness to execute, resources, or external involvement required. Try to push yourself. You can’t expect a different outcome if you don’t have different input. Be realistic and go for it!
